Meet John Pettit

John Pettit is a Vietnam Marine Veteran who served as an 81mm mortarman with 3rd Battalion, 26th Marines during 1967 & 1968 along the DMZ. After discharge, John graduated from college, succeeded in business, retired and moved to the Valley in 1999. After enjoying back country snowmobiling for 10 years, he began “giving back” by volunteering and teaching adaptive skiing. The highlight of the year is the week he spends teaching and mentoring Disabled Veterans at the annual National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, CO.

Oddly enough, the mortar is a natural segue to flying drones. You can fire a mortar round approximately 4 miles, and with the help of a Forward Observer, hit a target. Fast forward 50 years, GPS (Global Position Systems) guides the drone and cameras identify the “targets”. “The technology of drones is fascinating and mapping with the drone is a blast” (There’s that mortar analogy again.!)

After two local Marine committed suicide, John founded the Western Slope Veterans Coalition (WSVC) with the hope that we would have NO more Veteran suicides in the Valley. The County gave WSVC office space, and we opened The Jesse Beckius/Casey Owens Veterans Resource Center in Glenwood Springs. Presently, WSVC is exploring building 15 Tiny Houses for homeless Veterans in the area.
